This year’s winners of the Friends of the Baxter County Library Essay Scholarship have been chosen. This year’s scholarships totaled $2,800. Applicants were required to submit an essay on this year’s topic which was to discuss the impact on a community or civilization with an absence of or limited access to library services, citing current day, historical or literary examples.
First place of $1,500 was awarded to Grace Beckham. She plans to attend the College of Theology and Christian Ministry at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, majoring in Faith and Social Justice with a minor in Psychology.
Second place of $800 was awarded to Hunter Preis. He plans to attend Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, AR, and intends to major in Business Data Analytics.
Third place and $500 was awarded to Olivia Hill. She plans to attend Benedictine College in Atchison, KS, and intends to double major in Biology and Biochemistry.
All three scholarship recipients are graduates of Mountain Home High School.
The Friends of the Library will be accepting essay submissions for next year’s Scholarship beginning in February 2021. The scholarship is open to Baxter County residents that are high school graduating seniors, have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and have been accepted by an accredited school of higher education.
Since their founding in 1980, the Friends of the Library have given over $600,000 to the library as of May 2020. Their goal is to aid in developing public understanding of the library and making it better known to the citizens of the community. Friends donate their time and hard work to provide funds that would not otherwise be available.
